CareerPrepped: Flexible Tools and Resources for Educators
CareerPrepped offers a variety of tools and resources, allowing you and your institution to choose what to use, where to use it, and how to implement it. For example, Skill Builders are interactive learning experiences with three key components:
Reflect & Practice
Engage & Connect
Claiming a Skill Badge
Each part of a Skill Builder is designed to support different learning preferences, making it easy to use them in various ways for scaffolded learning.
Assignment Ideas
Here are some optional ways you might incorporate Skill Builders in your assignments (these are suggestions, not prescriptive methods, and assume learners are already onboarded to CareerPrepped):
Micro-Lesson Content: Assign learners the multimedia content within the Reflect & Practice portion of a Skill Builder as a "micro-lesson." This segment introduces the skill, explains its application, and guides learners in practicing it in workplace settings. To deepen understanding, consider assigning the companion Skill Builder workbook (available in the Resource Center of the Admin Panel). Workbooks can be used as activity-based guides that align with each Skill Builder.
Reflective Responses: Have learners answer the four reflection questions in Reflect & Practice, then download and submit their responses as an assignment or use them in group discussions. This helps learners self-reflect on past skill applications. Alternatively, create discussion forums in your LMS using these questions for peer-to-peer engagement.
Skill Challenges: Assign Skill Challenges to give learners hands-on opportunities to practice skills and build portfolio evidence. They can present their Skill Challenge outcomes, discuss in groups, receive peer feedback, or submit for instructor feedback, providing practical reinforcement of their learning.
Skill Badge Claiming: Guide learners in claiming Skill Badges, encouraging them to define, justify, and document their skills. They can present their badges, undergo peer review, or submit a badge URL for feedback. To prepare learners, you might have them draft responses to the badge questions and engage in feedback cycles. Once finalized, learners can claim their badge and submit it for assessment, using the provided Skill Badge rubric for structured feedback.
Systematic Use of the Career Portfolio and Career Site
To encourage consistent use of the CareerPrepped portfolio, you can ask students to submit the URL of their assignment files stored in their CareerPrepped portfolio, in addition to submitting files to your LMS. This approach ensures students compile a cohesive portfolio of their work, which can later serve as a basis for presentations on skill development and evidence-based skill claims. If appropriate, they may also present their Career Site — a professional online presence showcasing their Skill Badges, experiences, skills, and achievements.
Pre-Written LMS Assignment Instructions
To streamline assignments in your LMS, download the provided Google Document or Common Cartridge file, which contains ready-made instructions, videos, and rubrics for embedding CareerPrepped assignments. The Common Cartridge file can be easily imported in to an LMS that supports the Common Cartridge data standard, allowing you to customize, sequence, and select assignments as needed.
